Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political literacy is an essential aspect of democratic participation, enabling citizens to make informed decisions during elections and actively engage in governance. Local governments, as the closest tier of governance to the people, have a critical role in promoting political literacy. In Gusau Local Government, Zamfara State, various political education initiatives have been undertaken to raise awareness among citizens about the electoral process, political rights, and civic responsibilities. This study will assess the role of the local government in promoting political literacy and its impact on voter behavior.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to enhance political literacy in Gusau, a significant portion of the population remains uninformed or misinformed about the political process. This gap in political knowledge limits the ability of citizens to make informed choices during elections. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of local government initiatives aimed at improving political literacy and the challenges faced in reaching the target audience.
